“The report says [the driver] told investigators he was moving the pole because it was on the ground so close to traffic lanes. A database search found [he] had 72 scrap metal-related transactions for recycling since January.”

They might have gotten away with it if they hadn’t added the flagging.

The truly sad part is the recycling place would have likely accepted it. When the police came to check on it several weeks later their excuse would be, “Sorry, we don’t have a way to verify where the scrap brought in by meth heads comes from.”

I have no doubt they would have taken it. Money is money.

trying to find the article. my buddy went to highschool with this moron, who decided to steal a bronze plaque from the town square. A 200+ lb plaque. so the idiot goes to the scrapyard, the guy plainly sees its a plaque and goes “im going to have to call my manager on scrap on shipments over $500, so if you can just sit down’ meanwhile hes texting “call the cops now” .

During college we had a hurricane and some guys at my school noticed one of those huge 4 light tall, 4 direction, stop lights that hangs at the center of an intersection had come down. They proceeded to load it into their van, drive back to campus, haul it up a flight of stairs to their small dorm room. One wonders why. Unfortunately for them a cop had seen them loading the van and followed them back to campus then waited until they had struggled and strained to get this multi hundred pound thing up stairs. The cop knocked on their door and told them to take it back to the intersection where they got it and leave it on the side of the road or he would arrest them for theft. So they got to do it all in reverse but at least they didn’t get arrested and the city had one less obstacle in the road to clear
